From Rich at Marysville:
I am putting this up for review by the team.
We have options to turn off/on most of the Alert Icons, but not the Medical Alert. Too many of us have been lax with HIPAA violations regarding how this field is used. Most times we let parents enter this info and it contains diagnoses. This information is then available to all admin staff and teachers. It should NOT be shared with teachers, only treatments should be shared with them. However, there is currently not a way to turn off the Medical Alert to teachers. Due to this issue, we are currently looking at repurposing this field for treatment only (to be reviewed by nurse/clinic aide) and creating another field(s) for medical alert info entered by parents.
Sometimes we are so focused on just getting data in that we miss the bigger picture. The education side of data is FERPA and we forget about HIPAA with all of the medical information that nurses/clinic aides must collect and use. A little push for doing the right thing could help us all!
